Ferguson charged over referee remarks
LONDON (AFP) - Alex Ferguson was charged Monday with improper conduct by the Football Association (FA) for publicly labelling referee Alan Wiley "unfit".
The Manchester United manager made his comments after the Premier League champions were held to a 2-2 draw by Sunderland at Old Trafford on October 3.
Ferguson apologised for the remarks but that didn't stop the FA from pressing charges against the Scot which could lead to a possible touchline ban and fine.
Ferguson accused Wiley of not being "fit enough for a game of that standard" and of "walking up the pitch for the second goal needing a rest".
The FA said Monday in a statement: "Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged with improper conduct.
"The charge relates to media comments made by Ferguson about referee Alan Wiley following United's match against Sunderland at Old Trafford on October 3. He has until November 3 to respond to the charge."
Ferguson, in his apology, said: "I apologise to Mr Wiley for any personal embarrassment my comments may have caused and to the FA for going public with my views.
"In retrospect I accept that they could be deemed as expressing those views in an inappropriate form. It was never my intention to bring the focus of intense media interest on Mr Wiley and I will apologise to him personally when I return from an overseas trip during the international break," he said.

France to face Ireland in World Cup playoffs
ZURICH (AP)—France will face Ireland in a two-leg playoff for a spot at next year’s World Cup in South Africa, while Portugal was drawn Monday to play Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Also, Russia will face Slovenia and Greece will play Ukraine. The draw featured the eight best runners-up from European qualifying.
France got perhaps the toughest test of the four seeded teams. The French will travel to Dublin for the first leg and host the Irish for the crucial return.
“I don’t think they wanted to play us either,” France technical director Gerard Houllier said. “Both teams start with an equal chance. A lot of Irish and French players play in the Premier League so it’s going to be a good game.”
Portugal, Russia and Greece must all play at home first before facing their lower-ranked opponents on the road.
The matches will be played Nov. 14 and 18.
The draw for the World Cup finals will be made on Dec. 4 in Cape Town. Next year’s 32-nation tournament is scheduled for June 11-July 11.
FIFA was criticized when it decided last month—with just two rounds of qualifying left—to seed the playoff draw and ensure that the highest-ranked nations would not face each other.
Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni suggested FIFA acted to protect marquee attractions, such as Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo and France striker Thierry Henry.

Phillies beat Dodgers on Rollins’ double in 9th
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—They were one out from defeat. A moment later, Jimmy Rollins(notes) put the Fightin’ Phils within one win of the World Series.
Rollins lined a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning off All-Star closer Jonathan Broxton(notes) and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 Monday night for a 3-1 lead in the NL championship series.
The defending champions can earn their second consecutive pennant with a victory at home in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Cole Hamels(notes), last year’s NLCS and World Series MVP, will take the mound for the Phillies. Clayton Kershaw(notes) or Vicente Padilla(notes) will start for Los Angeles.
“This is big,” Rollins said. “The pressure’s all on them.”
Trailing 4-3, the Phillies started their rally with one out in the ninth when pinch-hitter Matt Stairs(notes) walked on four pitches against Broxton. Stairs hit a two-run homer off Broxton in Game 4 of the NLCS last year at Dodger Stadium.
Broxton then hit Carlos Ruiz(notes) with a pitch, but pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs(notes) hit a soft liner to third for the second out.

Brilliant Button clinches title
Jenson Button sealed the drivers' championship with a sublime recovery drive at a dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix won by Red Bull's Mark Webber.
Brawn's English driver started from 14th but executed a series of spectacular early overtaking moves before finishing the race fifth.
He was already set to clinch the crown when a late puncture dropped main title threat Rubens Barrichello to eighth.
Brawn still took the constructors' championship in their debut season.
Barrichello, who badly wanted to win on a circuit he was born in the shadow of, was running third before his unlucky puncture smoothed team-mate Button's path to the title he seemed destined for since his explosive start to the season

Al-Qaeda suicide bombers were keen to target Man U players in Indonesia
London, July 31 (ANI): Suicide bombers who attacked two luxury hotels in Indonesia this month aimed to kill members of the Manchester United football team, according to an internet message allegedly written by the fugitive leader of an al-Qaeda faction.
Police investigating the bombings two weeks ago has not authenticated the message, posted on a blog in the name of Noordin Mohammed Top, self-styled leader of al-Qaeda Organisation Indonesia, reports The Times.
If it is genuine, then it represents an alarming new threat to the security of sports teams across the world.
Noordin was immediately named as the chief suspect in the bombings, and is wanted in connection with four attacks going back six years that have killed 240 people.
The team was not due to check into the Ritz Carlton until two days after the bombing for a friendly fixture against an Indonesian team.
The trip was immediately cancelled after news of the attacks. (ANI)

Error gives Yankees a marathon win
Rodriguez, Yankees edge Angels on error in 13th
NEW YORK (AP)—Alex Rodriguez(notes) is putting all those playoff failures behind him. The Los Angeles Angels are turning the AL championship series into a defensive debacle.
Coming through under pressure once again, Rodriguez hit a tying homer in the 11th inning and the New York Yankees edged Los Angeles 4-3 Saturday night on Maicer Izturis’(notes) error in the 13th for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Fifa investigates Maradona tirade
Argentina coach Diego Maradona is to be investigated by Fifa following his furious outburst after the World Cup victory in Uruguay on Wednesday.
Maradona delivered an expletive-laden tirade, broadcast on live TV, that was directed at reporters and critics after his side qualified for the 2010 finals.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter said there was "no alternative" but to ask Fifa's disciplinary committee to open a case.
Maradona, 48, could be banned for a minimum of five matches and fined.
However, the head of the Argentine Football Federation, Julio Grondona, claimed: "If it were another coach or player, the matter would not have had such importance.
"Everybody knows he's a temperamental person and he's already said he won't speak like that again."

CC Sabathia and Yankees stop Angels cold
NEW YORK (AP)—CC Sabathia(notes) heated up as the night went on, throwing fastballs past the Los Angeles Angels and pumping his fist for emphasis.
On a blustery night more suited to bobsleds than baseballs, Sabathia pitched eight superb innings of four-hit ball to win his second straight postseason start, and the New York Yankees took advantage of a rare sloppy game by the Angels to win the AL championship series opener 4-1 Friday.

Loss of Davies just starting to impact Team USA
It took just a glance around the lower bowl of RFK Stadium, turned temporarily into a sea of white placards bearing the number "9," to see how much U.S. Soccer misses Charlie Davies.
Davies, the national team striker who was severely injured in a car crash early Tuesday morning, received a series of touching get-well messages from teammates and the Washington, D.C., crowd Wednesday night.
Captain Carlos Bocanegra dedicated the team's dramatic last-ditch 2-2 draw against Costa Rica to Davies, who is almost certain to miss the World Cup after being ruled out for between six to 12 months.
But as thoughts turn to South Africa next summer following an intriguing and tumultuous qualifying campaign, how much will Davies' presence be missed on the field?
While it is hard to read too much into what was effectively a meaningless game for the U.S. on Wednesday, with qualification having already been wrapped up four days earlier, the performance gave some kind of a glimpse into life without the young Sochaux front-man.
Davies is the only player in the squad who possesses a genuinely electrifying pace and that is a major reason why he has become such an important cog in coach Bob Bradley's machine.
Without him, the tempo of the U.S. attack becomes more languid - and more aerial - with the taller and slower Jozy Altidore stepping in against Costa Rica.

Dodgers rally, beat Phils and tie NLCS at 1-all
LOS ANGELES (AP)—A grounder off a fielder’s glove. A bunt that slipped by two players. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ latest postseason rally began in the weirdest, wackiest way.
Another throwing error by Chase Utley(notes), a pinch-hit single and two walks also were part of the Dodgers’ crazy eighth inning that produced a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, tying the NL championship series at one game each.
The Dodgers took the lead after Phillies pulled Pedro Martinez(notes), who allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings. Andre Ethier(notes) drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk from rookie J.A. Happ(notes), capping the Dodgers’ third comeback win of this postseason.
“We’ve been doing it all year, it seems like. We’re relentless. We never give up,” catcher Russell Martin(notes) said. “We go out there and compete, play through 27 outs, and whatever happens, happens. But we never keep our heads down.”
Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is Sunday in Philadelphia.

Homer-happy Phils beat Dodgers 8-6 in NLCS opener
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Brad Lidge(notes) and the Philadelphia Phillies picked up where they left off a year ago against the Dodgers in the NL championship series.
Carlos Ruiz(notes) and Raul Ibanez(notes) hit three-run homers, reliever Ryan Madson(notes) got a key out and Lidge finished the Phillies’ 8-6 victory over Los Angeles in Game 1 Thursday night.
Manny Ramirez(notes) homered, but grounded out weakly with two runners on against a struggling Madson to end the Dodgers’ two-run rally in the eighth. They stranded 10 runners in the game.
“It’s like a prize fight, we just came up a little short,” Dodgers manager Joe Torre said.
Lidge then worked around a single and a walk in the ninth, helped by a double play that made him for 3 for 3 in save chances this postseason—he posted three saves against the Dodgers in last year’s NLCS.

England 3-0 Belarus
England rounded off an impressive World Cup qualifying campaign with a comfortable victory over Belarus at Wembley.
Peter Crouch pressed home his claims for a place in the squad for South Africa by taking advantage of Wayne Rooney's absence to spearhead a new-look England attack and score twice.
He put England ahead in the fourth minute when he slid home a cross from Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor as Fabio Capello's side swiftly took control against a poor Belarus side.
Shaun Wright-Phillips, another member of Capello's undercard still with much to prove as the countdown to the World Cup continues, added the second after 59 minutes following a short corner from substitute David Beckham.

Playing for Davies, US draws with Costa Rica 2-2
American players wanted to win for Charlie. They didn’t, but it sure felt like a victory when the United States scored with just seconds remaining in its final World Cup qualifier.
After Jonathan Bornstein’s goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time gave the United States a 2-2 tie against Costa Rica on Wednesday night, players took a victory lap. They carried a banner with the No. 9, the jersey number of Charlie Davies, their teammate who is hospitalized with serious injuries from an automobile accident.
“We used Charlie’s situation to motivate us,” goalkeeper Tim Howard said. “We’re happy he was alive, and that in itself gave us a lift. Charlie would give anything at this moment to put on a jersey and have it all back. You almost kind of feel lucky and privileged, and that was kind of motivation to us.”

Man U to make 35 m pound bid for Ribery
London, July 31 (ANI): Manchester United is ready to secure the services of French winger Franck Ribery for a playing fee of 35 million pounds.
The Premier League champions, however, will wait for a fortnight before weighing in so that a clause in Ribery's Bayern Munich contract is active, reports The Sun.
The French winger is due a loyalty bonus on August 14, after which he is expected to request a transfer.
Ribery has indicated he would be willing to move to Old Trafford and wants to quit Germany.
United believe Ribery, 26, is prepared to force the issue but would not do so until all financial issues have been sorted out

A total of 58 teams have competed in La Liga, nine of which have been crowned champions. Since the 1950s, Real Madrid and Barcelona have dominated the championship. The former have won the title 31 times while the latter have won it on 19 occasions. However, during the 1930s and 1940s and in the last two decades, La Liga has seen other champions including Atlético Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia, Sevilla, Deportivo, Real Sociedad and Real Betis.
La Liga is one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world, with an average attendance of 29,029 for league matches in the 2007-2008 season. Premier League
The Premier League is an English professional league for association football clubs. At the top of the English football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with The Football League. The Premier League is a corporation in which the 20 member clubs act as shareholders. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing 38 games each totalling 380 games in the season. It is sponsored by Barclays Bank and therefore officially known as the Barclays Premier League.
The competition formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from The Football League, which was originally founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal. The Premier League has since become the world's most watched sporting league.[1] It is the world's most lucrative football league, with combined club revenues of £1.93 billion ($3.15bn) in 2007–08.[2] It is also ranked first in the UEFA coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years, ahead of Spain's La Liga and Italy's Serie A.[3]
A total of 43 clubs have competed in the Premier League, but only four have won the title: Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, and Chelsea. The current champions are Manchester United, who won their eleventh Premier League title in the 2008–09 season, the most of any Premier League team. Chelsea currently hold the record for most points in a season, while Arsenal are the only team in the history of the league to go unbeaten in a single season

US player Davies: several broken bones in accident
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP)—U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies had several broken bones and a lacerated bladder after a one-vehicle accident Tuesday in which another person was killed.
Davies underwent several hours of surgery at Washington Hospital Center Medstar, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. The injuries make it unlikely Davis will play in next year’s World Cup.
The tibia and femur in Davies’ right leg were broken. He also sustained facial fractures and a fracture in his left elbow in the accident, which took place at about 3:15 a.m. in the suburbs of the nation’s capital.
Davies will be hospitalized for at least a week and additional operations will be required to stabilize his broken elbow and possibly the facial fractures.

Pakistan's Younus offers to quit
Younus Khan has tendered his resignation as Pakistan captain despite being cleared of match-fixing charges by a parliamentary sports committee.
He submitted his resignation to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) - who are yet to accept it - on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old said he was "disgusted by match-fixing allegations made against me and the team."
Younus was attending a hearing to discuss Pakistan's performance in the recent ICC Champions Trophy.
National Assembly committee chairman Jamshed Dasti had alleged that Pakistan deliberately under-performed during the competition - although he later insisted that the committee never intended to make match-fixing allegations against the players.
"We are totally satisfied with the explanation of the team management and board," he said. "The committee is satisfied no match-fixing took place."
Younus told the Reuters news agency: "Yes, I have submitted my resignation. I have told the chairman to go through my resignation and read my point of view."
PCB chairman Ijaz Butt added: "It's an emotional decision and I reject it.
"I hope to convince Younus to revoke his decision, but if he sticks to his stand then the matter will be decided by the PCB's governing council next week on 19 October."

MIAMI (AP)—When the wildcat delivered a big play for the Miami Dolphins, coach Tony Sparano skipped along the sideline with glee, reached back and threw a roundhouse punch.
That was just in the first quarter. The knockout came much later, again with the wildcat.
Running back Ronnie Brown(notes) took the snap with 10 seconds left and scored on a 2-yard keeper for the fifth lead change of the final period, giving Miami a wild 31-27 victory over the New York Jets on Monday night.
Newcomer Braylon Edwards(notes) provided a big boost for the Jets, and two fake punts fooled the Dolphins. But Miami gained 110 yards with the wildcat, which was instrumental in three touchdown drives, including the last one.

Mike Tyson's tearful interview
In an emotional interview with Oprah Winfrey, Mike Tyson claimed to be a new man - one focused on his family. The former heavyweight boxing champion feared that the erratic behavior that has dominated his life for two decades would kill him within two years if he returned to it.
Tyson opened up about most of his headline-grabbing actions over the years, including his years in prison, his tempestuous eight-month marriage to Robin Givens, his long addiction to drugs, the $400 million fortune he squandered, the 1997 comeback match in which he bit Evander Holyfield's ear, and -- for the first time -- the death of his 4-year-old daughter earlier this year.
